Selective Mutism in Autism

Overview

Join LDMH Education and GOSH Neurodisability Service for an informative and practical webinar exploring the topic of selective mutism in the context of autism.  Selective mutism continues to be a much-misunderstood condition – even more so when it occurs in autistic children – and the things that adults instinctively do to ‘help’ children with selective mutism can often be counter-productive. Sean Douglas, A highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist will bring his experience of working with autistic and selectively mute children to provide a valuable introduction to the topic.  The webinar will cover: diagnostic criteria and terminology, commonly co-occurring conditions and why selective mutism is more prevalent in autistic children.  Sean will also address the unhelpful myths that persist around selective mutism / autism and the common mistakes that are made by professionals when working with this group of children.  Finally, Sean will share ‘tried and tested’ practical strategies that will help you feel more confident when working with autistic / selectively mute children.

Aims of the course

This webinar aims to provide a useful and accessible introduction to professionals who would like to know more about selective mutism in the context of autism.  It aims to help staff feel more confident when working with autistic children who also have a diagnosis of selective mutism by providing important theoretical information (around diagnostic criteria and terminology) and also practical ‘tried and tested’ strategies that support the meaningful participation of this group of children and young people.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

  • Be aware of the diagnostic criteria for selective mutism
  • Develop an understanding of the terminology used in this area
  • Understand why selective mutism is more prevalent in autistic children
  • Be aware of the conditions that commonly occur alongside autism and selective mutism
