Behaviours of Concern

Overview

Join LDMH Education and GOSH Neurodisability Service for an informative and practical webinar exploring behaviours of concern in children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism. We will examine why these behaviours occur, the underlying needs they may communicate, and the important functions they can serve. Drawing on our experience working with children and families, we will explain how behavioural assessments are used to understand these functions and guide effective support. The session will cover proactive strategies to reduce the likelihood of behaviours of concern arising, as well as reactive approaches that can be used safely and effectively when they do occur. Through a real-life case study, we will bring these concepts together and demonstrate how they can be applied in practice. We will also highlight the importance of supporting parents and carers, sharing advice, resources, and sources of further help to promote the wellbeing of the whole family.

Aims of the course

To explore why behaviours of concern can occur in children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism, the underlying needs, and the important functions they can serve. To explain how behavioural assessments are used to understand these functions and guide effective interventions, including proactive and reactive strategies to support the wellbeing of parents, carers, and the whole family.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

• Be aware of behaviours of concern that can occur in this group of children
• Identify needs that can underlie behaviours of concern
• Recognise the important functions that behaviours of concern can serve
• Describe the role of behavioural assessments
• Apply proactive strategies
• Identify appropriate reactive strategies
• Advocate for the importance of supporting parents, carers, and whole families, as well as the child
