Overview

This course aims to equip nurses and ODP with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and confidently care for paediatric patients in the post-operative recovery setting.

Through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on training, the course will focus on the unique physiological and psychological needs of children and young people, enabling participants to recognise and respond effectively to potential complications and provide age-appropriate care throughout the recovery stages.

This course is delivered face to face over 2 days at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Learning Outcome

  • Demonstrate an understanding of paediatric anatomy and physiology and how these differences impact the post-operative care compared to adult patients
  • Recognise and respond to common post-operative complications in paediatric patients, including airway obstruction, respiratory distress, and emergence delirium.
  • Apply appropriate pain assessment tools and management strategies tailored to different paediatric age groups and developmental stages
  • Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and patient safety

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the care of the children and young people during the immediate post-operative period.

The target audience includes:

  • Registered Nurses working in paediatric wards, recovery, theatres or critical care units
  • Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) involved in the perioperative care of paediatric patients
  • Student nurses and ODP who are currently undertaking paediatric placements or have a specific interest in paediatric perioperative and post-operative care

This course is suitable for both novice and intermediate practitioners seeking to develop confidence and competence in paediatric post-operative recovery care, with a focus on evidence-based practice, patient safety, and family-centred care.
