This course is designed for all health care professionals who care for children and young people with a haematology/oncology condition in a variety of settings, and who do not have a degree or advanced level qualification. The two-day programme provides a firm foundation in paediatric and adolescent haematology and oncology care. The content ranges from understanding the biological basis of cancer and common treatment modalities to mastering crucial supportive care and managing oncological emergencies. You will gain a clear understanding of the patient journey and your vital role in delivering compassionate, evidence-based care. Clinical expert speakers will deliver the sessions.

Aims and Objectives
The course content and learning outcomes are:
Knowledge & Understanding
- Describe the current context of Paediatric and Adolescent Cancer Care within the UK healthcare system
- Explain the basic pathophysiology of cancer and differentiate between the major cancer groups affecting children and young people.
- Identify and briefly describe the primary treatment modalities used in paediatric oncology, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and haemopoietic stem cell transplantation.
- Outline the basic principles of Targeted Therapy and its place in modern cancer care.
- Describe the purpose of research and clinical Protocols in paediatric cancer and the role of the healthcare professional in their implementation.
- Identify the different types of blood products commonly used in this patient group and state the nursing considerations for safe administration.
Clinical Skills & Application
- Participate effectively in group work and presentations to collectively summarise the presentation, investigation, and management of a specific haematology/oncology condition.
- State the purpose and common side effects of key Supportive Care Medications (e.g., antiemetics, analgesics) and discuss essential safe administration principles.
- Demonstrate the principles of essential Nursing Supportive Care (e.g., infection prevention, nutrition, skin integrity) for CYP receiving treatment.
- Identify the various types of Central Venous Access Devices and state the necessary care and management principles for preventing complications.
- Identify the early signs and symptoms of common Oncological Emergencies (e.g., Febrile Neutropenia, Tumour Lysis Syndrome) and articulate a plan of care.
- Describe the role and function of the Palliative Team and the importance of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to end-of-life and supportive care.
